Welcome and congratulations on taking the first steps to starting your own blog!
Starting a blog can be a scary, overwhelming, and exciting! I want to help take the scary and overwhelming part out of the process with this Easy Step by Step Guide for Beginner Bloggers. Let’s get your creative juices flowing and get started!
What is your blog going to be about?
Have you decided on your ‘Niche’? If yes, then you are ready to get started. If not, I would suggest you figure that out before you go any further. Finding your niche is an important part of growing your business and blog and you should spend plenty of time deciding on what it will be.
How do you decide on a niche?
Experts say to create your blog around your passions. Good ol’ fashion brainstorming will help. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen and just start writing down every topic and idea you can think of. When you are finished you can place those ideas in categories. It should become clear to you what your passion is and what your niche can be.
Suggestions to think about:
- What do you love to spend your time doing?
- What do you get most excited about?
- What are your hobbies?
- What do you love to read about?
- What do you love to talk about for hours?
Now write 5 blog titles and create 5 blog posts. If you can easily come up with things to write about, you may have found your niche. It should come naturally to you and honestly, you should be able to come up with about 20 blog posts easily.
Next step is deciding on a domain name. The most common ones end in .com. You can do a search to see if the domain name you want is still available. You will want a name that is easy to spell and easy to remember. Keep in mind what you want your Brand to be. Do you want to brand yourself as a parent, entrepreneur, fitness, fashion, beauty, etc.? Blue Host and Go Daddy both have easy domain name search tools. Crossing my fingers for you that the name you want is available.
The 3 platforms you have probably heard of are WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr. My personal favorite and the one I highly recommend is WordPress. It is a massive platform and can offer you the most control and flexibility over your blog.
How can you tell the difference?
- Blogger: yourblog.blogspot.com
- Tumblr: yourblog.tumblr.com
- WordPress Self Hosted: yourblog.com
Other reasons why you should WordPress:
- WordPress will allow you to grow and change over the years.
- They can support e-commerce on their sites.
- WordPress is beginner friendly.
- A lot of YouTube tutorials to help you get started.
- Massive theme library with many FREE themes to choose from.
- Beginner friendly.
- Self Hosted (you have control over your blog).
- Huge plugin selection.
- Great for small or large sites.
- Incredible systems support.
- WordPress is Free!
A domain host is who you will be ‘renting’ internet space from. The only way to be given access to the internet is to rent space. This will allow you to get your domain name into the search engine world and have someplace to link your domain and data to.
I have used both GoDaddy and Blue Host. Both offer great customer service and provide rental space for your domain name. My preference to use with WordPress is Blue Host. I found that WordPress, MOJO Marketplace, and Blue Host make a great trio. All 3 work well together and offer support as a whole. That will make creating and running a blog much easier and more efficient.
Next will be choosing a theme for your site. There are a lot of themes to choose from and this will take some time. Each theme usually has a few different layouts and you should be able to watch demos of them to see if it will best fit your blog content.
Should you use a free or paid theme? You can find some really great themes for free and it may be all you need. One thing to consider before beginning a theme search is what is your long term goal for your blog? This will help you determine if a specific theme will grow with your plan and ideas.
Tip: Look at the newest themes first. Then look to see how many purchases have been made of that theme. That is a good indication of the quality of the theme. You will want a theme that is current and stays updated. I purchased my theme thru MOJO Marketplace. I have been very pleased with the customer service and how well they partner with Blue Host. They offer quality website themes, templates, and plugins. The Theme I use is the Highend Ultimate Multi-purpose WordPress Theme.
There are a lot of YouTube tutorials that can help you get your WordPress theme set up. I suggest watching these before you even start if you want to set up your blog on your own. YouTube WordPress Training.
I went a different route and signed up for WP Live for my first 2 months. This allowed me to call in anytime I had a question and have 30 minutes of technical support at a time. There is no limit as to the number of times you can call in per day. A chat option is available as well.
Visit MOJO Marketplace and use discount code: Di$Count to enjoy 20% off your theme, plugin, or service and Build a Better Website!
If you plan to make money with your blog, you will most likely become an affiliate and partner with different companies. When you become an affiliate, you are assigned an affiliate link that will be used to track your referrals and payments. Those links are not ‘pretty’. Pretty Links are just what the name says. Take for example the name Pretty Links. By using this plugin I am able to change https://prettylinkpro.com?aff=janelrae to Pretty Links. Which one do you think looks better?
Another great way I use this is if I am advertising a product, I can create a Pretty Link to advertise my website as well as the product I am advertising. I use these links to advertise on social media platorms and email newsletters. For example https://www.janelrae.com/Maskcara.
This is a must plugin if you plan on adding links to your blog.
Email Marketing and Blog Forms
Every blogger should start off collecting subscribers and creating an email list. This will help grow your visits to your site. Your blog and social media work hand in hand. Grow your social media and have more exposure for your blog. Grow your site subscribers and have more exposure to your social media accounts.
This will be a time-consuming step in creating your blog. There are a few different email plugins you can use. I tried MailChimp to start because they offer free services. I found the setup process confusing and hard to follow. You may like them and if you are wanting a free email service you can give them a try.
FYI: MailChimp does not allow you to use their services to promote Direct Sales or MLM’s. If you have a Direct Sales or MLM business you want to promote through email, you will not be able to use MailChimp.
I switched over to ConverKit and have been very happy. There is a small monthly fee based on your email subscriber list. It is very user-friendly and I have not had any issues with it.
Pinterest and Instagram Scheduling
Pinterest and Social Media are two of the easiest ways to start promoting your blog. Creating and building your blog is going to take time. A lot of time. Using a scheduling app is a great way to get your Pinterest and Instagram posts scheduled and remove that from your daily task list.
Tailwind is the Pinterest & Instagram Marketing tool of choice around the globe. It is an app you will hear a lot about as you build your blog and social following and will soon become your best friend.
A huge bonus to Tailwind is the Hashtag Finder. This is an epic addition to the Tailwind app. Your posts will dramatically improve and you will reach your desired following if you use the right hashtags. You can find 30 hashtags in under a minute. That alone makes this app a must in growing your social following.
You are now well on your way to creating your own blog!
